Hill Training

“I found my thrill ……on blueberry hill ” (Louis Armstrong)

Last year  I attended a wedding in Whistler a few weeks before running my first 1/2 marathon. I thought it may be a good idea to view the route prior to the run, to see where I may face difficulties. This was a good idea, but in hindsight I wished I biked the route several months earlier. Blueberry Hill proved to be a challenge for me- a novice runner. (Not so “thrilling” as Louis Armstrong sings)

This year, with the knowledge gained from my first run, I intend to train more on the hills. The training program I followed, DIY 12 week- posted on the Whistler 1/2 Marathon Website was great. It incorporates drills, long and short runs as well as tempo workouts. There are hill workouts in weeks 4-6 but as I want to feel more comfortable on the hills and particularly- Blueberry- I will try to fit more hill training throughout the program.

My advice to fellow beginner runners is to train on your weaknesses, to feel confident in the areas you find most challenging.

It is a beautiful 1/2 marathon route and I WILL look forward to meeting the challenge on June 1, 2013.
