Injuries! All runners get them and we all get frustrated when they happen.
I have had my fair share of them over the past few years; you know the kind – the one that starts somewhere and then leads to something else, which leads to another. In my case it was IT band to hip flexor to lower back. Summer and Fall of 2012 I spent doing re-hab exercises, changing my stride and working on core strength; all in an effort to re-gain the chance to do some long runs that I love so much.
Well wouldn’t you know that as soon as I was feeling strong and in good form – my soleus cramps up a few miles into a run and I have to walk back with a limp and tail between my legs – ARGHH. That’s over 3 weeks ago now and I am hoping to start a light jogging routine sometime in the next few weeks.
What I am doing with this running down time though is focusing on trying to mitigate any other muscle imbalances that I have – and now is the perfect time to do that. In fact even without this latest injury I would be focusing on clearing out imbalances in the running off season. I plan to start the new year off right by having any muscle imbalances identified and on the way to having them sorted!
